Well, it has been an exciting ride the last couple of months
for the Oliver Springs Historical Society.... the Fall Festival, new and exciting
pictures, artifacts ...... whew!! Where to begin? Let's begin with Johnny Duncan.
The Societys October 2001 meeting was pleased to have a visitor, Keith Glass, who shared with us some information about a native son, Johnny Duncan. Mr. Glass also presented the Society with some Duncan memorabilia for the Museum.
Keith Glass made a special trip
to Oliver Springs during a business trip to this country from his home in Sydney,
Australia. He is a producer,
writer and performer. Mr.
Glass was a personal friend of Johnny Duncan during his adult years abroad, and when he
began to write the Johnny Duncan Story for a CD he was producing he became curious about
Johnnys early years. He contacted
members of the OSHS, and was able to learn more about Johnnys childhood, and discuss
it with him before his death. The Duncan CD, Last
Train
From Tennessee to Taree is sold by Rollercoaster Records
of England.

Keith also has written a well-researched dissertation
on Johnny Duncan's life. ![]()

Several Society members remembered Johnny and one, Lanford Duncan, recalled singing with Johnny in a gospel quartet called "The Windrock Four".Lanford thought he might in fact be distant kin to Johnny Duncan. Among those recalling Johnny during his Oliver Springs days were Cleopatra Brown, Betty Borum, Sonny Fairchild, and OSHS Chairman Sonny Harvey. Helen Freels announced to those present that she possessed an original vinyl recording of Johnny, Lanford, and the gospel group. Arrangements are being made for Robbie Underwood to digitize the recording in his studio and archive it on cd. When the transfer is complete, the recording can be played at the future meeting of the Society.
