Ahhhh... October, and the fragrant aromas wafting upon the zephyrs...

No, wait, that's the neighbor's garbage. I was talking about those other aromas..... you know, apple harvest, sorghum cooking off over a slow fire,   hot pumpkin pie fresh out of the oven.. THOSE smells.

I know it's been awhile since you've heard from me, so let me be the first to tell you that we in the Oliver Springs Historical Society have been VERY busy. The Annual Fall Festival sponsored by the Historical Society has come and gone, but oh, what a grand time it was!! Rather than tell you first, here's some pictures.. then we'll talk about it...

At right center is Diane Carden, face painter extraordinaire, with one of her gleeful subjects..

At right is Lauren Garner, whose soulful delivery belies her youth....

The gracious lady in pink is none other than Bromma Parnell Pemberton, who grew up in our humble town. Mrs. Bromma was honored by the Historical Society for her family's contribution to our town's founding and history. Mrs. Bromma had two family members on the first town council in 1905, the year the town was first incorporated. Mrs. Bromma moved to Oneida to find her own path, becoming very successful in business and civic life there; however, she has never forgotten her roots here. If you've ever been fortunate enough to make the pilgrimage to her house during the Christmas holidays, you know that Mrs. Bromma knows how to throw a party wwithout equal. I love to sit and chat with her, as she exudes a warmth and grace not often witnessed in these helter-skelter days of culture gone amok...

Why, if that isn't town councilman "Chad" Chadwell doing what he does best. No, we're talking about the funnel cake...

Speaking of town council, isn't that councilman Chris Hepler hiding behind those Foster Grants?...

Chris, Chad, Mayor Kelley, Paul Fox, and others from the city really got behind this year's festival. In having spoken to them, I truly believe they realize the force for good that the Oliver Springs Historical Society embodies. We're not about trying to stand in the way of progress, fighting over every old outhouse just because it's "historical", et al.. However, we ARE about trying to maintain and further our bridge to our proud past while striving to make the present and future culturally rooted and grounded. As the saying of old doth proclaim: "If you don't know where you've been, how can you tell where you're going?"  Amen....  

At present we are making plans for a grand "Christmas in the City" festival that will feature carolers from many area churches. The carolers will be stationed at various perches in and around the old historic district. Plans are in the works to have a cozy horse-drawn hay ride that will treat folks to a musical journey through the town.. At various stops, revelers will be treated to goodies.. Mulled cider, candies, treats.. Isn't that just the most heart-warming scenario? One thing's for sure.. we seldom rest on past accomplishments...

This is a good time to mention that we at the Oliver Springs Historical Society just LOOOOVVVE to hear from our friends scattered on the four winds.
